this song is loveable.
i've heard that, in the lyrics, Brian describes his first gay experience...anyone knows of that's 100% correct?

I know nothing about what you heard Anna, but I don't think it's right.
1.Brian likes all of his songs
2.He has been singing Nancy Boy for many years
3.He enjoys singing it
4.He isn't afraid to say his opinion or write his experiences; so it's impossible not singing it for this reason

and he sang Nancy Boy again in the meds tour
So, as Sofia, I don't think it's the good reason

Yeah....people say really stupid things some times I think.
We would know it until now if it was like that.

Aaa....
+ This year, they caused the death of Nancy Boy. If it was his experience, I don't think he would let such thing happen...

Post by Admin Tue Jan 02, 2007 10:12 pm

They talk about it at the video included.
I didn't really understand, but from what I understood....
Nancy Boy was a very special song for them; one of their early songs, reached very high at the charts then and people love it so much.
But in Meds, they explain this death. And Brian says it isn't so sensible that they did that to such an adored and important for them song. It was a song that introduced many fans to Placebo, but I don't really know what's this "death".
I think I have to see the DVD again

the death of nancy boy is supposed to be an attempt by the band to discard the thing that made them famous in the first place - their image.
in this case "nancy boy" is more like a symbol of that image and that era, it doesnt directly refer to the song.
they present this as the start of a new era for the band, more focused on the music.
all in all, it's just a marketting thing really, so ultimately nothing to worry about ;)

Post by over_end Thu Jan 04, 2007 11:56 pm

when i think about Nancy Boy i always imagine Brian in skirt ,with long hair ,and singing "fifty pounds, press my button/going down" altough this is not one of theyr best songs i still like it .
and this is what brian said about Nancy Boy:" It criticizes people who think it's fashionable to be gay - guys who think that because 'some of my best friends are gay' that they are going to try it out because they're in a milieu where it's cool, but they haven't actually felt the desire themselves. In the song, I'm questioning people's reasons for sleeping with people of the same sex. In the same way that heroin is very hip today, being bisexual seems to be very chic. It's trying to capture that certain point of an evening, or a certain point of intoxication when all you can do, or want to do, is fuck. It's a celebration, but it also pokes fun at drug-induced promiscuity and that experimentation for experimentation's sake. I've also been called 'Nancy Boy' a thousand times, so it's about me as well."(sorry for this long quote but i couldn't abstain Happy )

Post by Levy Sat Jan 06, 2007 6:35 pm

It seems I can't abstain either.I found another one of Brian's explanations for Nancy Boy,which is,where I found it,the beginning of over_end's quote:
"It's not your run-of-the-mill, boy-meets-girl song. Sonically, we tried to capture a kind of drug-induced sexual rush; it's got a rising car sound which was meant to kind of reproduce the first rushes of E, and it's obvious that the character in the song is kind of drug-crazed at that moment. There are times in your life where you are so off your head that all you really want to do is fuck. It's a celebration and a slag of that behavior at the same time. It doesn't promote promiscuity but it doesn't judge it either. It pokes fun at very macho, classic phrases - 'I'd fuck her with a paper bag over my head'; 'Don't look at the mantelpiece when you're poking the fire,' et cetera. And like with the words queer and fag, when you appropriate it for yourself, it starts to get attached with your own power. So that line about 'Eyeholes in a paper bag, greatest lay I ever had' - it's just saying that the drag queen in the song is probably very ugly, but is attempting to reach some kind of beauty, twisted beauty, perverse beauty. I guess it's stating you can be ugly and be an amazing lay; it doesn't really matter".
Sorry for its length Happy

this song is one of the first songs i heard from placebo & one of the reasons i started listening to Placebo. i remember that the first time i heard it i was kind of giggling because of the lyrics laugh it impressed me really.. their style and the fact that they weren't afraid of telling things the way they are.. and that it was so different from everything i've heard before.. and that's what makes them special.. anyway.. it's still one of my fav songs..
